The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo - Indescribable

We had what will surely be one of the major highlights of our trip last night - the Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo is an institution during the month of August, and is perhaps Scotland's premier attraction at this time of year.

The array of talent on display was staggering - not only were there  marching bands and pipe and drum corps from all over the world,  but there were also performing art groups who dazzled with their dancing, musical ability and showmanship.  Here is a glimpse of how the whole place looked last night (on a beautiful, crisp and clear evening)

No doubt there were more bagpipers per square foot than any place in the world last night!  Here are some of the bands that appeared, in all their glory (even if the photos are a little fuzzy!

In addition to the bands, we were treated to a world wide array of dance and performance groups - from African Drummers to Maori chanters to dancers from Singapore.

One big highlight of the Tattoo is the incredible lighting of the castle, through colors and projectons, to match the moods and national/ethnic origin of the performances.  Against the stunning backdrop of the darkening sky, the castle walls came alive with possibility.

The finale, with the entire cast of over 1000 performers, fireworks, the singing of auld lang syne and the final bagpipe tune played by a lone piper atop the castle walls  - legendary.

Glad we went last night when it was lovely, and not tonight when it is cool and rainy!

Next report - today's exciting performance and a Ghost walk!
